Knock Me a Kiss by Charles Smith is a captivating fictional play set against the vibrant backdrop of the Harlem Renaissance. The story revolves around Yolande Du Bois, the ambitious and charismatic daughter of W.E.B. Du Bois, as she faces a heart-wrenching decision: follow her fiery passion for the free-spirited musician Jimmy Lunceford or marry the celebrated poet Countee Cullen, a man of prominence and prestige. The 1928 marriage, marked by grandeur and societal expectations, becomes a public spectacle but privately unravels, revealing a poignant exploration of love, sacrifice, and the complexities of personal fulfillment versus familial duty.
