The World Premiere of La Virgen y el Gitano uses Flamenco music and dance as a language to tell its story.

Interpreted by 16 artists from Spain, Latin America, and the U.S., under the direction of Ilisa Rosal, BFLR’s Founding Artistic Director, this work is based on the novella by D.H. Lawrence.

The story explores the conflict between youthful desire and societal constraints and is centered on Yvette, a young woman living in a stifling rectory dominated by her overbearing grandmother, aunt, and father. The narrative highlights Yvette’s longing for freedom and passion, embodied by a gypsy man who represents a life of vitality and sensuality in stark contrast to the oppressive environment of her home. The tension between the vibrant energy of the gypsy and the stagnant moral world of the rectory invites us to reflect on the complexities of desire and identity, frustration and hope, fulfillment and loss.
